Almighty Idiot by Zebesian Almighty Idiot by Zebesian
This picture is a testament to what simply keeping at it can do for your artistic ability. This picture is an accidental 'draw it again' of one of the oldest pictures in my gallery, Heavily Armed Pokey -old-, which I uploaded eight years ago. It feels good to look at them side by side.

A lot has changed in eight years but my love for EarthBound and the Mother series as a whole has not. While talking to glittermiilk about the franchise to try and get her to play it I stated nostalgia tripping harder than I think I ever have before and just had to draw this. There is a beautiful humanity to the Mother franchise that I think transcends the medium and... Iunno. It just continues to inspire me to this day.

And don't even get me started about Porky Minch. I identified so hard with his character when I was younger and still do to this day. When I was his age I was literally the same kid- a chubby long haired blonde loser bully with an unhappy home life who pushed everyone away while craving their admiration. I tell you what- if an evil alien had taken advantage of my insecurities at that age and warped my mind I would literally be trapped in an Absolutely Safe Capsule myself right now lol.

I think most of my long time watchers have hear me ramble on about my love for the franchise and the character at great enough length, so I'll cut it short. If you haven't played the Mother series though, you need to. They are more than just games. ; u;

Also I love this stupid video to death.

Wow, Porkey like a boss was quite easy, but to know that SNES could do such a metal sound in a song like Cease To Exist, was a lot worthy, plus the terrifying environment, this picture reminds me very well to that moment, very good work.

Oh, man, this is terrific. When I saw the thumbnail, I immediately thought of the picture from eight years ago. It's incredible how much better you've gotten.

MOTHER is a great series, and I've gotta say, I'm a Porky fan too. Anyone who hasn't tried the game should absolutely play it. I've still got my SNES copy of the game, but I also bought it on the Wii U just to show my support. It's that incredible.

Ugh, but I don't want to hype it up too much or I might end up pushing folks away. Dangit! Would that I could keep my rabid fanboyism under control.

Anyways, wonderful picture, wonderful character, wonderful series.

Yeah I'll buy EarthBound 100x over just to show Nintendo that there is love for it out there! I cannot sing it's praises enough, yet it seems like no matter how hard I push it I just can't seem to get new people interested in giving it a fair shake. Sometimes it makes me wonder if I'm stuck in the past.

Yeah, I get that a lot too. Maybe the graphics look really dated? Even on release it got panned for bad graphics, but I honestly always thought it was stylistic enough to not look bad at all. It could also be the genre. Turn-based JRPGs just aren't as fashionable as they used to be.

There is hope, though. One of my friends, who always ragged on me for liking EarthBound, gave it a shot a little while back after years of just not playing it, and he enjoyed it. In return, I stopped ragging on him for liking Quest 64.

Which I admittedly still have not played.

To shift gears here:

Woah that feel when during my nostalgia tripping I stumble on to a thread started by my favorite EB artist of all time Garlar and not only do you comment on it but you say that you drew the pic that we met for the first time in the comments of for them. God and it's been eight years. Time sure does fly.
ness and pokey... BFF by cecil777

Yet it seems fitting somehow. EarthBound pretty much encapsulates the feeling of warm nostalgia that this whole chain of events is givin' me ha ha.

Dangit, I feel flattered. I used to be someone's favourite artist? That's really cool o:

You got hella better at drawing, but then again, eight years really IS a long time, isn't it? Favourited, by the way :)

I miss those times ahah

Ha ha, yeah definitely! Though no need to use the past tense there- your art still stands tall as some of the best. B]

I am so floored to see you here lookin' at my art. Even if you aren't uploading anymore I hope you're still drawing, and if you are still drawing I hope you come back to us again some day. That's just this guy's opinion though.

And thank you so much! Though I didn't draw the image I posted when I mentioned you, that was my buddy cecil777 (who I apparently met because of you, in a way). I did recently redraw that pic as a gift for him and I'll take it either way- I've definitely gotten better over the last almost-decade. ; u;

Yeah I miss 'em too. It was a golden age. But hey, it doesn't have to be completely over! Sounds like we both keep those memories close somewhere deep  down, so it's never really over then.

Oh, God. My posts. The lack of capitalization. The awful punctuation.

It's a bit embarrassing, but somehow heartwarming at the same time. That's where it started, with a single shared opinion about the characters in a relatively obscure video game. It was EarthBound that really kicked our relationship off.

I'd almost forgotten that.

Then I drew a Shippiddge picture because I was a Smashtasm fan and, by some incredible circumstance, it turned out you knew the guy. Then, after hanging out on DA a lot, you invited me to join the CFC forums. I made an introductory post, and a couple of people even remarked that you "might actually like me" before you showed up in the thread and revealed that we were buds. Just remembering it, I chuckled a little. It's really kind of funny, how it all came about.

Yeah I never got the complaint about the graphics either, tbh. I'd say a good four fifths of the games from that era have aged worse than EarthBound, it's so frustrating to hear a simplistic artstyle confused with bad graphics.

I know, right? Somehow, some people don't get that the graphics are deliberately simplistic, and they look good for the look that they're trying to accomplish. It's a style. It's a stylistic GAME, you know? But a lot of people, especially at the time, complained about it. I dunno, maybe it's just a dealbreaker for some people even if they do understand it, but when I was a kid I thought it looked great. I especially loved how colorful it was, in a mire of games with dark color palettes.

This is the kind of picture I'd hang as a poster in my wall, it's perfect for that! It's cartoony and colorful, yet detailed and very well done. Also, it's becoming a bit uncommon to see EarthBound fan art this good now, so this is quite refreshing actually.

I do LOVE EarthBound and the MOTHER series aswell (and now I'm kinda glad the hype for the games has finally died down, as there are less poser kids since most of them moved over to Undertale's fandom, lol), and I agree that there's something quite special in these games that no other interactive story have even emulated.

And, odd you identify yourself with Porky, because I identified myself with Ness so deep that I was feeling a geniune sensation of nostalgia during my first playthrough of the game. But you seem a lot nicer than Porky nowadays? Maybe I would look for a way to free you from that Capsule assuming you learned your lesson? Or would that be a fatal error? Heheh!

Omg really? You'd put it on your wall? That's the nicest thing I've ever heard! How exciting. Well I'm glad to know that I made it into the 'good fanart' group. :D

And yeah ha ha, I'm glad too. There was a real swell in popularity for awhile there but I didn't really feel 'at home' in the community.

And yeah I'd hope I seem nicer than Porky these days. The fact remains though that I used to be a lot like the kid and perhaps I feel for him even more because I grew up and he mighta done the same if fate had given him the chance.

EB gives me a general sense of nostalgia too. It just has a warm fuzziness about it and it's so deeply rooted in the culture of the decade I was born. It's interesting that you identified that closely with Ness though, since he's sorta the blank slate avatar.

Yeah! I'd buy it if I saw this being sold at some convention or something.

The actual MOTHER fanbase is quite dedicated and devoted to the series. I'm a big fan but had barely integrated to the whole community, but thanks to them we have MOTHER 3 translated, and that was such a big feat specially since I followed their work almost from the beginning (man when the translaton was finished, the hype was so real...!). That provoked the first skipe on popularity, but it got greater when Nintendo put EarthBound on the virtual console.

Well my connection with Ness was less direct but perhaps deeper in a way. I actually didn't like the character at first, and I really don't see myself as the sporty-outdoorsy kid, but what he is and what he means is more relatable to me.

For starters, ever as a kid, since I was about 10 years old, I always dreamed of having psychic powers such as telekinesis and teletransportation, and I craved that power so, so bad. I also had an imaginary game-story where I was the hero and evil aliens invaded earth in a modern-day setting. The first world was a lot like Onett, a regular city-town. The second world was a lot like Peaceful Rest Valley and also had a giant mole for a boss.

Ness is also brave and honest, qualities I strongly identify with, but has struggled to grow up. Playing EarthBound is an allegory itself for growing up, fighting your inner demons and facing your fears. There's suffering and long walks in a desert. There's friendship, and learning of unspeakable secrets. The part where that monkey guru, Talah Rama, speaks to you in a riddle-like way you can't completely understand, and then makes a monkey teach you how to teleport... it was my favorite part becase it was so... beautiful and mysterious, plus there I got my favorite power (which I still wish I had!).

Ness is also, to me, like the permanent kid, and in that way I also see my immaturity and the fact that some people had told me that I'm so child-like (not necessary a bad thing, I believe). Ness is also my main at Smash Bros.

Oh, and I once found a photo of me when I was 10 years old, and I was wearing a shirt of blue and yellow stripes, blue shorts and a red cap. How odd!

And not to mention that the world of EarthBound is permanently trapped at the 90's, the time and culture I did grow up! Everything about that game is so 90's.

Yeah I was halfway active on Starmen.net back when they were finishing up the fan translation, I remember those days. I wasn't sure how the Virtual Console release affected the community though, I guess I just got to old or something ha ha.

Aww and that's so beautifully put. Yes, Ness really is more than the average 'blank slate' RPG protagonist. Sure he doesn't talk and he's blank enough to project whoever you are onto him, but he has a family and an established life that you enter. You see his thoughts on the wall and even enter is mind. It makes him a lot more endearing. <3

and Ness is my main too, woah!

Yeah I can't help but sympathize deeply with him. I think that Ness' vision of him in the magicant really says it all. He's just a sad, jealous little boy. ; -;

Of course that doesn't forgive everything he does, but I'd say his horrifying fate is retribution enough.

Understanding =/= justifying. :lol: You can understand and explain the motives of a villain without justifying them
